A. Understanding the Text

Q 1. The three phases of the author’s relationship with his grandmother before He left the country to study abroad ?

Ans :- Answer: The three phases of the author’s relationship with his grandmother before he left the country to study abroad are:

Childhood – when he went to the village school and the grandmother helped him to get ready and went to school with him.

Boyhood  when he went to the city school in a bus. He shared a room with grandmother but she could no longer help him in his studies.

Early  youth – when he went to the university and was given a room of him own. The common link of friendship was snapped.

 

Q 2 . Three reasons why the author’s grandmother was disturbed -when he started going to the city school ?

Ans :- Answer: The three reasons why the author’s grandmother was disturbed when he started going to the city school are:

1.     She hated western Science and learning.

2.     There was no teaching of God and the Scriptures.

3.     She was unhappy with the idea of music lesions as she considered music suitable only for people with low dignity .

 

Q 3. Three ways in which the author’s grandmother spent her days after he grew up ?

Ans:- The three ways in which the author’s grandmother spent her days after he grew up are:

1.     Spinning wheel .

2.     Reacting prayers.

3.     Feeding the sparrows .

 

Q 4. The odd ways in which the author’s grandmother behaved just before she died ?

Answer:- Just before her death, the author’s grandmother refused to talk to them. Since she had omitted to pray the previous night , she was not going to waste any more time. She ignored their protests. She lay peacefully in bed praying and telling beads.

 

 

Q 5. The way in which the sparrows expressed their sorrow when the author’s grandmother died ?

Answer: Thousands of sparrows sat silently surrounding the dead body of the author’s grandmother. There was no chirruping. The author’s mother threw some crumbs of bread to them. They took no notice of them. As soon as the grandmother’s corpse was carried off, they flew away quietly.

Ans  :- These ways to show author grandmother was religious person

1) Her one hand was always busy in telling the beads  .

2) she sat in the temple and read scriptures.

3) she was unhappy that there was no religious teaching at the author’s school .

4) she turned to only prayers and telling the beads before dying.

 

Q 2. Describe the changing relationship between the author and his grandmother. Did their feelings for each other change?

Ans :- The author and his grandmother’s relationship change a lot the author and his grandmother good friends in the village but the auther joined city English school and she remainded confined to home as she could not accompany him.he now had a own room.

 

Q 3. Would you agree that the author’s grandmother was a person strong in character? If yes, give instances that show this ?

Ans :- Yes the author grandmother was a person strong in character . That instances that showed this are

1) She belive in certain thing about life .

2) She thought teaching of god scripture is batter than science and music.

3)  She feeding sparrows.

4)  She spinning wheel.

5) She no display any emotion when author go to abroad .

6) She sang a several hour in home . etc.

A. Understanding the Text

Q1 :- What does the word ‘cardboard’ denote in the poem ? Why has this world been used ?

Ans :- Cardboard refer to the photograph .this word used because the photograph is poet mother old memories  .

 

Q2 :- What has the camera captured ?

Ans :- the camera captured is :-

1) Happy movements of childhood poet’s mother .

2) Its sea photograph .

3) His two cousin Betty and Dolly .

4) The girls will paddling in the water .etc

 

Q3 :-What has not changed over the years ?Does this suggest something to you ?

Ans :- Thw sea has not changed over the years . he suggested to me nature is not changed it will be permanently fixed .

Q 4 :- The poets mother laughed at the snapshot .What did this laugh indicate ?

Ans :-The poets mother laughed at the happy memories of the movements that had passed long back .

Q5 :- What is the meaning of the line “Both wry with the labored ease of loss ?

Ans :- These lines means memories of  mother old days when she going near sea.

Q6 :- What does  “this circumstance” refer to ?

Ans :- “this circumstance” refers to the present situation of the poet wherein the poet is absorbed in the painfull memory of her dead mother .

Q 7 :- The three stanza depict three different phases . What are they ?

Ans :- first stanza  - mother shows 12 year old girl with pretty and laughing face.

Second stanza –describe the middle – aged mother laughing at her own snapshot .

Third stanza – there is pall of silence that the death of the poet’s mother has left in the life of
